演变　　

荷兰语是由古代低地德语诸方言演变而来，最早的荷兰语文献可追溯到12世纪的弗兰德斯。当代荷兰语是五种方言群体的集合：中西部方言（包括南、北荷兰省，乌德勒支，海尔德兰的大部和西兰的岛屿等地区使用的方言），东北方言（格罗宁根、德伦特、上埃塞尔和海尔德兰东部使用的方言），中南部方言（北博拉班特及其周边的林堡地区，比利时的安特卫普、博拉班特和东弗兰德斯），西南部方言（西弗兰德斯）和东南部方言（荷兰的林堡地区大部和比利时的同名地区）。东北方言通常被称为萨克森方言，东南方言被称为东部低地法兰科方言，其他的三个群体则被称为西部低地法兰科方言。荷兰的弗里斯兰省的语言通常单独列为一种语言：弗里斯兰语。
　　荷兰语跟比利时西弗兰德斯省所使用的佛莱芒语其实是几乎相同的语言，可以互通。此外，南非的官方语言之一阿非利加语是17世纪殖民者所说的荷兰语的变种，有相当数量的马来、班图诸语言的借词和语法散布其中，南非白人的祖先名为布尔人，其名称的由来是来自荷兰语中boer(农夫)这个单词。 荷兰语的舌后音较德语、俄语等多，除了ch发舌后音外，连g也是发舌后音的。

现状

　荷兰语不仅在荷兰作为官方语言使用，也是南美洲苏里南（荷属圭亚那）和加勒比海中的荷属安的列斯群岛的官方语言。它也通行于比利时北部，但是在那里，该语言一般叫做弗兰芒语。荷兰语的使用总人数约两千二百万（2006年）。
　　荷兰语属于印欧语系——日耳曼语族——西日耳曼语支——低地Franconian支。它介于同属日耳曼语族的德语和英语之间，比任何一种语言都更接近英语。
　　荷兰语的字母与英文相同，但荷兰语中并不使用Q、X、Y这三个字母，他们只有当语句中含有外语时，才可能出现。 （注：荷兰语字母及发音如图）

影响

　因为荷兰人长期以来是一个航海民族，所以荷兰语在世界很多语言中留有痕迹。许多荷兰语航海词汇，为其它语言所采用。在现代印尼语中，还可以清楚地看到荷兰语的习惯说法和句型。英语中源于荷兰语的词有：deck（甲板），yacht（游艇），easel（画架），freight（船运的货物），furlough（休假），brandy（白兰地），cookie（家常小甜饼），cruller（油煎饼），waffle（蛋奶烘饼），maelstrom（大旋涡），issinglass（鱼胶）和Santa Claus（圣诞老人）。纽约市中许多地名，例如Brooklyn（布鲁克林），Flushing（弗卢胜），Harlem（哈莱姆），Staten Island（斯塔腾岛）和Browery（鲍厄里），提醒人们想起这些地方是荷兰在新阿姆斯特丹的旧殖民地。
